Russian War in Ukraine 2024
28 galleries
Since returning to Ukraine on July 12, 2024, I have been deeply engaged in documenting the ongoing impact of the Russian invasion on the lives of its people. Equipped with my professional gear, including two body cameras, multiple lenses, my British Land Rover Discovery 4 for transportation, and a Starlink satellite for reliable communication, I am committed to capturing the human stories that often get overshadowed by the broader narratives of war.
This collection of those galleries reflects my journey of reconnecting with individuals I photographed in 2022 and producing new stories that highlight human rights issues and the aftermath of the conflict. These galleries encompass the aftermath of missile attacks, daily life amidst the war, rescue operations, and personal stories of resilience and survival.

23 imagesIn November 2022, I met Halina, a 73-year-old resident of Borodyanka, in her top-floor apartment at 425A, northwest of Kyiv. The building had suffered severe damage from systematic Russian airstrikes in February 2022, leaving the structure on the brink of collapse. Despite appeals to local authorities, Halina's ceiling leaked extensively, and I found her weeping as she attempted to manage the flooding with kitchen cloths. Halina's story is one of survival against both Russian aggression and local neglect. Residents of her building narrowly escaped execution by Russian forces during the occupation but have faced a different kind of threat from the slow and inadequate response to their housing needs. When I revisited Halina on 24 July 2024, she shared mixed feelings about the ongoing reconstruction efforts. Repairs had been made to the roof during the winter of 2022, but the work was slow, and she faced significant hardships, including twice contracting COVID-19. As winter approaches, Halina remains concerned about rising electricity costs and incomplete renovations. The following gallery captures the resilience and daily struggles of Halina and her neighbours, providing a window into their ongoing fight for normalcy amidst the backdrop of war and its aftermath.
