Located within Azerbaijan’s official borders but run by ethnic Armenians, the landlocked enclave was the subject of devastating wars between '91 to 2020.
44 days of heavy fighting between Azerbaijani and ethnic Armenian forces had been ongoing until both sides agreed to a Russian-brokered peace deal on Monday, Nov 9, 2020. The enclave is internationally recognised as Azerbaijani but has been run by ethnic Armenians since 1994. The peace deal sparked jubilant scenes in Azerbaijan and fury in Armenia. Under its terms, Azerbaijan will hold on to several areas that it has taken during the conflict. Armenia also agreed to withdraw from several other adjacent areas.
Nagorno Karabakh is located in the Caucasus, between Europe and Asia. Historically, its population has been mostly ethnic Armenian with a substantial Azerbaijani minority. The region was incredibly important both to Armenians and to Azerbaijanis.
Nagorno-Karabakh has kept its de facto autonomy, but Azerbaijan maintains its claim to it.

1 galleryDuring 44 days of the war, the region saw an end of the conflict after a ceasefire agreement was signed by the leaders of Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan on 9 November to end the military conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. Ethnic Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh kept its de facto autonomy, but Azerbaijan maintains its claim to it with the government establishing the Karabakh Region Authority (KRU) for the districts of Nagorno-Karabakh that came under Baku's control. The city of Stepanakert (Khankendi) is now under the jurisdiction of the KRU of the Ministry of Justice of Azerbaijan.
