Moldova, a small landlocked country in Eastern Europe, has a rich and tumultuous history. From its origins as a part of the Roman Empire, to being ruled by various kingdoms and empires throughout the centuries, to finally gaining independence in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

My first visit to Moldova was in November 2022, just after spending nine months reporting on the Russian military aggression in Ukraine. I took a night train from the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and arrived in Chisinau, Moldova's capital city, early in the morning.

As I explored the city, I couldn't help but notice the similarities between Moldova and Ukraine, from the architecture to the people's hospitality. However, Moldova faces its own unique set of challenges, with a struggling economy, political instability, and ongoing tensions with Russia, which has been accused of meddling in Moldovan politics.

As a photojournalist, I am drawn to these complex issues and will continue to return to Moldova to observe the developments and capture the stories of the people affected by them.
