Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, following a NATO bombing campaign in 1999 that aimed to halt the ethnic cleansing campaign of ethnic Albanians by the Milosevic regime. The Serbian armed forces of Yugoslavia systematically targeted ethnic Albanians after the arrival of Milosevic at the top of Yugoslavia in 1989. The actions of these forces led to the deaths of nearly 250,000 people across the Balkans within one decade. The declaration of independence by Kosovo was a result of these events and the desire of the ethnic Albanian majority in the region to establish their own state. The aftermath of this conflict has had a significant impact on the region and continues to shape political, social, and economic realities to this day.
