5 imagesRamush Haradinaj is a Kosovar politician, leader of the AAK party, and was the 3rd Prime Minister of Kosovo. He is a former officer and leader of the Kosovo Liberation Army and previously served as Prime Minister of Kosovo between 2004 and 2005. He served as a rebel commander in the 1998-1999 Kosovo conflict, which eventually led to Kosovo declaring independence. He said he stepped down so he could attend court as an ordinary citizen. Mr Haradinaj, who denies war crimes charges, has been tried and acquitted twice at the UN tribunal.

8 imagesKosovo Liberation Army war veterans have launched a protest outside the Kosovo government building in Pristina over what they say is the government’s poor treatment of former fighters. Headed by the Council for the Protection of the Rights of the KLA, the protesters said that the government should finally start to respect and legally protect their cause. However, despite their meeting with Kosovo’s Premier Hashim Thaci on Monday afternoon, an agreement was not concluded which would have averted the protest. According to the 15 protesters, the patience of KLA soldiers and their family members has “come to the end”. They complained to have been ignored by the state’s authorities who have not been done enough for their well-being.

Doris Pack, head of the European Parliament’s delegation for the West Balkans, made the comments after a meeting with Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci. The European mission in Kosovo, EULEX, declared itself “fully operational” at a ceremony on Monday. Pack said, “We need EULEX all around Kosovo and have agreed that we don’t need UNMIK any more.” She said EULEX’s deployment across Kosovo is vital in the fight against crime in the north, adding both Kosovo Albanians and Serbs were to blame for problems.
